The day began with band practice at the local high school, as we are staying in the Historic Center of Morelia and are surrounded by high schools, elementary schools and law schools. It is surprising that with over a hundred musicians, most of them playing some brass instrument of torture, not one could manage to play on key. It was like the brass bands of a Fellini movie gone terribly wrong. Yet, even at 7 am there was a charm to the music, a charm that is uniquely Mexican.
The first thing we did after the morning serenade was walk down the street to the Santuario de Guadalupe. It is a pink and red psychedelic explosion that must be experienced to believed. I have included a couple of Toni’s photos of the place, so that you can see it for yourselves. I should note that I have radically reduced the images so they can be transmitted.
In the afternoon, we went to the Panteón Municipal to continue Toni’s work on graveyards. She has shot graveyards in Prague, Vienna, New Orleans, Guatemala, upstate New York, California and almost every place where people die. I think that I will send these separately, as I am afraid that too many pictures will clog up everyone’s mailbox.
